P. nigra 'Henon' |
|
| Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon'
Another one of our favorites, P. nigra 'Henon' is a terrific screening bamboo. With its dense foliage and long, arching limbs (~ 2.5ft), 'Henon' provides excellent screening density. 'Henon' is a giant bamboo, reaching 60 feet in height and 4 inches in culm diameter at maturity. Stately, tree-like and very soothing to the eye, P. nigra 'Henon' takes approx. 25 years to reach its mature size, providing exceptional screening coverage as it matures. As the grove grows, its shaded culms turn 'cool' gray, creating the stunning effect seen, below. Cold hardy to -5 degrees F.

P. amarus |
|
| Pleioblastus amarus
A jewel of a screening bamboo, P. amarus has a 'tight' running growth habit, along with a short limbed, feathery leaf distribution. Its culms age to a dark mustard yellow, contrasting nicely with its deep green foliage. The best of both worlds, amarus gives excellent, dense foliage in a narrow depth, while allowing the contrasting culms to be seen. These characteristics make it well suited for small scale, contained plantings - walkways, poolside screening, living fences and more. Maximum height ~24ft (our farm), maximum culm diameter ~ 0.8 inches. Cold hardy to 0 degrees F.

Pseudosasa amabilis (Tonkin Cane, Tea Stick) |
|
| Pseudosasa amabilis (Tonkin Cane, Tea Stick)
This large leafed, highly flexible bamboo is one of the few standard bamboos that prefer partial shade to full sun. Planted as a tall understory planting under deciduous trees, Tonkin Cane is a very effective evergreen screening bamboo. In some climates, Pseudosasa amabilis may reach 50 feet in height, though, in our farm climate, it only attains a 16-18 foot maximum height. Cold hardy to 15 degrees F.
