About

Landscaping Solutions

Dwarf Bamboos - originally evolved to thrive in the shadows of taller plants, this group of bamboos prefers to grow in partial shade.  As such, they are excellent 'understory' plantings for larger bamboos, giving some lower visual weight to the planting, or as partial shade garden accents.

Indocalamus tessellatus - The largest 'leafed' bamboo, Indocalamus tesselatus thrives in shady, protected areas, bringing its graceful, shiny green leaves to understory plantings.  Usually less than 4 feet tall, it can reach 10 feet in height and has the largest leaves of any bamboo in cultivation, up to 26 inches by 4 inches.  Cold hardy to 0 degrees F.

Pleioblastus pygmaeus

A tiny, groundcover dwarf, Pleioblastus pygmaeus prefers medium shade and grows up to a foot in height in our climate, but most often remains a deep green, low, part to full shade groundcover.  'Pygmaeus' is cold hardy to 8 degrees F.

Shibataea kumasaca - An unexpected bamboo, S. kumasaca appears more like a creeping shrub.  Used as an attractive understory planting for other standard bamboos or alone, clipped into a hedge, shaped, or left natural, this dwarf, running bamboo is one of our most versatile.

Sinobambusa intermedia

Not a standard bamboo, not technically a dwarf, S. intermedia bridges the height gap, as its name implies.  Though described by the American Bamboo Society as a plant reaching up to 16 feet in height, at our farm, our 'intermedia' may possibly reach 8 feet in height.  A beautiful, gently spreading low planting most content in light shade.  Cold hardy to 10 degrees F.
